Ameen Sayani (21 December 1932 – 20 February 2024) is a well-known Indian radio host and announcer. He became well-known throughout Asia, not only in India. He hosted the renowned show Binaka Geetmala on Radio Ceylon.

Born in Mumbai on December 21, 1932, Sayani is most known for his radio introduction, “Namaskar bhaiyon aur behno, main aapka dost Ameen Sayani bol raha hoon” (Hello, sister and brothers, this is your friend Ameen Sayani.

For more than 42 years, Ameen was well-known for his show Binaca Geetmala, which aired from 1952 to the present day, mostly on Radio Ceylon and then Vividh Bharati (AIR).

Over the years, Sayani has also appeared in a number of films, including Boxer, Teen Devian, Bhoot Bungla, and Qatl. He made appearances in all of these films, sometimes announcing events.

Ever artistic from an early age, he began writing for his mother’s biweekly journal ‘Rehbar’ at the age of thirteen. At that same age, he also gained proficiency in broadcasting in English and began taking part in children’s shows on All India Radio Bombay’s English service.

Following the barring of Hindi music from airing on AIR by then-Minister of Information and Broadcasting B V Keskar, Radio Ceylon began to gain popularity, leading to a boom in Colombo transmissions.

When Sayani was given the opportunity to present “Binaca Geetmala” on Radio Ceylon in December 1952, she never looked back.

An unprecedented program, it ran for 42 long years, from 1952 to 1994, enjoying enormous popularity.
