As part of India’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its semiconductor industry, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday dedicated the sites of three new Semiconductor Plants In India : Two in Gujarat and one in Assam. Of these three plants, two are being set up by the Tata Group.

With a financial impact of almost Rs 1.25 lakh crore, PM Modi virtually attended the event “India’s Techade: Chips for Viksit Bharat” for the three semiconductor factories.

Three more Semiconductor Plants In India will be established under the “Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystems in India” initiative, which was authorized by the Union Cabinet last month under the direction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Within the next 100 days, work on all three units—two in Gujarat and one in Assam—will begin.

While the Indian semiconductor market is still in its infancy, numerous domestic and international businesses are hoping to capitalize on its enormous potential.

With a total expenditure of Rs. 76,000 crore, the Programme for Development of Semiconductors and Display Manufacturing Ecosystem in India was announced on December 21, 2021.

In collaboration with Powerchip Semiconductor Manufacturing Corp (PSMC), Taiwan, Tata Electronics Private Limited (“TEPL”) plans to establish a semiconductor factory in Dholera, Gujarat. A sum of Rs 91,000 crore would be invested in this factory. Six semiconductor foundries are owned by PSMC in Taiwan. The Dholera unit has a monthly wafer start capacity of 50,000 (WSPM).

In Sanand, Gujarat, CG Power will establish a semiconductor plant in collaboration with Renesas Electronics Corporation, Japan, and Stars Microelectronics, Thailand.

Rs 7,600 crore would be invested in the establishment of this facility. Chips for power, automotive, industrial, and consumer applications will be produced by the CG power semiconductor business.

Morigaon, Assam will host a semiconductor plant operated by Tata Semiconductor Assembly and Test Pvt Ltd (“TSAT”). This factory is being constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 27,000 crore and has a daily production capacity of 48 million chips.

Mobile phones, consumer electronics, telecom, electric vehicles, and automobiles are the segments that will be covered.

Twenty thousand advanced technology jobs will be directly employed by these units, and roughly sixty thousand indirect jobs will be produced.

These units will hasten the creation of jobs in the downstream semiconductor-consuming industries, including the automotive, electronics, telecom, and industrial sectors.

In the meantime, the first-ever high-end semiconductor fabrication plant in India is rapidly taking shape at Gujarat’s Sanand, home to American chip giant Micron. It is anticipated to start up in late 2024.

In Gujarat’s Sanand GIDC-II, Micron Technology is investing USD 2.5 billion (INR 22,500 crore) to build an ATMP (assembly, test, marking, and packaging) facility. Gujarat’s Sanand GIDC is a highly industrialized area that is home to numerous domestic and international manufacturing companies.
