The stunning collapse of Florida governor Ron DeSantis, who was once viewed as the front-runner to unseat former president Donald J. Trump as the Republican Party’s nominee in 2024, occurred on Sunday when he announced the suspension of his presidential campaign and gave his endorsement to the former president.

The former South Carolina governor, Nikki Haley, is Mr. Trump’s only remaining opponent following his withdrawal from the race just two days before the New Hampshire primary.

Following his humiliating 30-percentage-point loss to Mr. Trump in the Iowa caucuses on Monday, Mr. DeSantis was faced with the difficult decision of whether to continue. He gave his response on Sunday, admitting that continuing without a “clear path to victory” was futile.

After The New York Times reported that Mr. DeSantis was anticipated to withdraw from the race, Mr. DeSantis declared in a video that “I am today suspending my campaign.” He went on to say that “Trump is superior to the current incumbent, Joe Biden.

” That is evident. I will stick to my promise to support the Republican nominee, which I signed. Because we can’t revert to the previous Republican guard, he has my support.

After spending his Saturday night campaigning in South Carolina, Mr. DeSantis returned home by plane to Tallahassee. He was supposed to show up on Sunday afternoon at a campaign rally in New Hampshire, but it was postponed.

Mr. Trump had started using the past tense when discussing his candidature even before Mr. DeSantis made his statement. At a rally on Saturday night in Manchester, Mr. Trump wished Mr. DeSantis “may he rest in peace.”

With an eye towards 2028, Mr. DeSantis began to provide indications this week that he would consider withdrawing from the race, acknowledging that Mr. Trump had won resoundingly in Iowa.

It was both expeditious and pointless for Mr. DeSantis to support Mr. Trump. Other than pointing out that Mr. Trump was backed by the majority of Republicans according to surveys and that he wasn’t Ms.

Haley, the governor of Florida provided no justification for his endorsement. Additionally, Mr. DeSantis was unable to resist using his final opportunity to criticize Mr. Trump’s management of the outbreak and his party’s front-runner.

Mr. DeSantis appeared to be attempting to rally the right element of the party behind Mr. Trump by endorsing him, disobeying the reality that he was bowing down to a man who had mocked him as though it were a blood sport.

Mr DeSantis and his campaign proved to be an expensive failure, squandering tens of millions of dollars in tandem with well-funded outside groups for no apparent return on their investment after declaring his candidature for president in May with high hopes.

There were moments when it seemed like Mr. DeSantis was tumbling from one scandal to the next while his campaign dealt with blows like widespread layoffs and the aftermath from creating a social media video with a Nazi emblem.

Despite having a somewhat solid lead early in the contest, Mr. DeSantis was now polling in a distant third place in New Hampshire, with only about 6% of the vote.

Money looked to be evaporating for both Mr. DeSantis and his backers. Before Thanksgiving, no television advertisement supporting DeSantis had been shown in New Hampshire.
