Honduran Migrants Dissolved in Guatemala

A small group of Honduran Migrants Dissolved in Guatemala who were travelling to the United States from Honduras broke up when they arrived in Guatemala, but the main caravan broke up on Sunday, according to an official source.

The official reports that about 80 people have been permitted to go through Guatemala in small groups now that they have the necessary migration permits, with the remaining individuals being forced to return to Honduras.

With more than 500 passengers, mostly Venezuelans, this caravan had departed Honduras on Saturday.

The migrants, who were travelling to the Guatemalan town of Corinto, which is on the Honduran border, reportedly set out on foot from the northern Honduran city of San Pedro Sula.

Mena had reported the day before that approximately two hundred migrants who had entered Guatemala with the purpose of travelling to the United States were being held by the police in the eastern Izabal department, close to the Honduran border.

Large-scale migratory flows crossing Guatemalan territory had hitherto been largely unchecked. Yet last Thursday, President Alejandro Giammattei issued a warning to deport the most recent batch, claiming the coronavirus constituted a health danger.

Following through, Guatemala returned 3,300 migrants to the border with Honduras over the course of the weekend.

“Immigration expert Ursula Roldan of Rafael Landivar University stated that the border has unquestionably moved.” “We anticipated that states would use the pandemic as an excuse to priorities migrant populations as health and security concerns.”

Since the United States has essentially stopped offering refuge at the border and only permits necessary travel, the migrants’ chances of being in were already slim. Before the US midterm elections in 2018, the movements of the migrant caravan served as fodder for anti-immigrant propaganda.

Although Correa-Cabrera said she had not had a chance to examine this most recent caravan, in previous ones she had found common actors that helped mass movements but weren’t part of the migrants themselves.

Nonetheless, she acknowledged the push factors that encourage migration, such as weak economies and high rates of crime.

Three individuals who were present at earlier caravans were identified by an Associated Press correspondent in Honduras as being part of the group that organised last week.

One was near the Corinto border crossing where the migrants entered Guatemala, and the other two were at the bus station in San Pedro Sula where the group began.
